Gwyneth Paltrow under fire for calling out ‘rich white dudes’ in ‘tone deaf’ interview about wealth inequality

Gwyneth Paltrow raised eyebrows after a speech about wealth inequality on her luxury wellness podcast.

We speak with business reporter Kara Swisher Goop PodcastThe 53-year-old actor called out ‘super rich white men’ during a discussion in Silicon Valley about America’s tech giants such as Mark Zuckerberg.

‘How did we get here as a culture?’ Paltrow asked Swisher.

‘Obviously there’s a lot of revenue and profit behind this whole business, that’s the bottom line,’ he continued.

‘But how do you think we got to this place in culture where nothing matters and all that matters now are super-rich white men breaking the rules, making the rules, caring little about the negative effects on everything from health to culture?’

Swisher responded: ‘I think we have an idolatry of hipsters, we have an idolatry of wealth, and if you’re rich, you should be smarter; While they have all kinds of shortcuts.

‘And by the way, the innovations they benefited from were paid for by the American people.’

He added: ‘Why is it that a small, homogeneous group of people decide for the rest of us?’

Seemingly agreeing with Swisher, Gwyneth reflected on the myth of American meritocracy.

‘I feel like this idea is so unique to me about being American that anyone can do this, regardless of their socioeconomic background,’ he said.

‘But we put in this hierarchy… as if we opened up a hierarchy to give meaning to our lives or something. “And we’re instilling something extraordinary, I don’t know, God-like in these guys…” he continued, before being interrupted by Swisher.

Paltrow’s remarks ruffled some feathers among her followers, with some questioning whether the wealthy actress-turned-entrepreneur was the right person to address the US oligarchy.

Not only does the Goop founder have an estimated net worth of approximately $200 million, she is also the daughter of Emmy-winning actress Blythe Danner and Hollywood producer Bruce Paltrow.

‘Super rich white guys? ‘This is coming from Paltrow, this is kind of funny,’ one commented.

“I appreciate the question and thinking in that direction but at the same time your brand is based on luxury and extreme wealth,” another added.

‘Super white rich guys?! ‘How much does Goop charge for makeup?’ While a third asked this question, another accused Paltrow of being ‘super rich’.

‘You’re not that far from them, girl!’ commented another.

However, many of Paltrow’s fans also came to her defense and praised the famous actress for highlighting such an important issue.

‘People hating on Gwyneth for stating this are missing the point; It is the place where someone like him (rich and wealthy) needs to come to be heard by us poor people and to see and realize that he is not special, he is just privileged. ‘How could someone disagree when raising this issue based solely on his status?’ he asked.

‘I’m glad you mentioned that. You have influence because people admire you. Please keep doing this!’ added another.

‘Our culture is obsessed with (other people’s) wealth and power, even if it costs us personally. “Third, keep having these conversations,” he wrote.

In March, Paltrow admitted that she was one of Hollywood’s ‘original nepo babies’.

But he insisted his famous family did not guarantee him a path to fame and fortune.

‘I was extraordinarily lucky to be given opportunities early on, probably because I was one of the original nepo babies, but I’d be lying if I said it clarified my path,’ she told People magazine.

‘There have been many moments when the industry has made it clear that women are expected to stay in their lane, to be graceful, quiet and above all else, to be one thing,’ she continued.

‘And I’ve never been very good at being just one thing.’

Although she still acts occasionally, Paltrow’s primary focus these days is running her Goop empire.

The luxury brand started as a newsletter in 2008 and has since expanded into products, fashion, a print magazine, a podcast, and a Netflix docuseries.
