Sadiq Khan accuses Trump of having ‘absurd obsession’ with him as he reignites war of words

London mayor Sadiq Khan has rejected Donald Trump’s criticism and described the US president’s attention as “ridiculous”.

Sir Sadik told Big Problem magazine, which claims the capital is the “antithesis” of everything Mr. Trump stands for.

Sir Sadiq said: “It’s ridiculous that President Trump is obsessed with me. It’s like I’ve been living inside this man’s head rent-free for 10 years.”

He describes Trump as “objectively speaking, a nativist. He’s a protectionist and one-sided. He believes in mono-ethnicity. He believes in the superiority of his religion, Christianity, and Americans.”

In stark contrast, Sir Sadiq defended London as “a progressive, liberal, diverse, multicultural city and the greatest city in the world. So we are the antithesis of everything he believes in.”

He suggested that Trump’s desire to “spread disinformation about this dystopian version of London” stemmed from Londoners electing “this guy who is a Muslim of Pakistani origin.”

The mayor also expressed concern about the broader implications of Mr Trump’s rhetoric, adding: “The problem is that Trump has moved into mainstream views that should be around.”

In December, Trump branded Khan a terrible, cruel and disgusting mayor while criticizing immigration to the UK.

In an extraordinary interview, the US president singled out the mayor of London, calling him a “disaster” and suggesting he had done a “terrible job”.

He said of Mr Khan, the city’s first Muslim mayor, whose parents came from Pakistan: “He is elected because so many people come. [to the UK]. They’re voting for him now.

“He’s a terrible mayor. He’s an incompetent mayor, but he’s a terrible, cruel, disgusting mayor. I think he’s done a terrible job. London is a different place. I love London. I love London. And I hate to see that happen.”

Trump has repeatedly attacked Khan since 2015, when the Labor politician condemned the then-presidential candidate’s proposed ban on Muslims traveling to the United States.
