Andhra Pradesh launches initiative to clear water hyacinth and revive water bodies

In a major step towards environmental restoration and sustainable development, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched a large-scale mission to rejuvenate water bodies across the state while creating livelihood opportunities for women through innovative waste management practices.
S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), said on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, that under this initiative, wealth will be generated by producing organic fertilizer from hyacinth.
The initiative aims to address the increasing spread of water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic weed that seriously affects lakes, ponds and canals in both urban and rural areas. He said the uncontrolled growth of weeds clogs irrigation canals, deteriorates water quality and disrupts aquatic ecosystems, posing a threat to agriculture and public health.
Adopting the mission mode approach, the State government is planning scientific removal of water hyacinth from identified water bodies in municipalities, villages and irrigation networks. Multiple departments, including urban local bodies, rural development agencies and water resources authorities, are coordinating the implementation to ensure effective implementation, the official said.
Unlike previous apps that focused solely on weed removal, the program also targets the root causes of infestation. Authorities are introducing measures to prevent untreated sewage from entering lakes and ponds by installing treatment systems, including traditional and nature-based solutions.
A key feature of the initiative is the conversion of removed biomass into value-added products. Women’s self-help groups will create new income opportunities by converting harvested water hyacinth into organic compost, fiber products and handicrafts.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said the program is expected to improve groundwater recharge, increase biodiversity and promote irrigation, as well as promote sustainable livelihoods and community participation across the state.
