Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA V. Muraleedharan faced criticism after a video of him sprinkling sweets on students’ tables at the Pravesanotsavam (school reopening) event in Kerala went viral.

The incident took place at Dr. Kattela. It took place at Ambedkar Memorial Model Residential Higher Secondary School.

In the video, the MLA is seen leaving the sweets from the lid on the tables instead of handing them over to the students.

The incident received swift reaction from many people, including former Minister of State for General Education V. Sivankutty.

Sivankutty demands apology

Calling the Kazhakuttam MLA’s actions “discriminatory and shameful”, Mr Sivankutty demanded that the former apologize.

He questioned how Mr. Muraleedharan could treat students in this way in an institution where children from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Communities were educated. “This was an affront to the dignity of the students and would leave a lasting impact on their psyche,” Mr. Sivankutty said.

Former Women and Child Development Minister Veena George also asked ‘Ithaa Puthuyugam?’ He reacted to the question. (Is this new age?).

He said in a Facebook post that the incident was heartbreaking. “It was a crime that those responsible for the protection of rights did not find anything unnatural in this and remained silent,” he said.

Mr Muraleedharan could not be reached for comments.
