Nelly Korda rocks USA soccer jersey on course at US Women’s Open, delivers patriotic message

Nelly Korda is feeling extremely patriotic ahead of this week’s U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club.
Korda, the world’s No. 1 player, arrived on the field Wednesday wearing a USA men’s soccer jersey and wore it throughout the training tour.
With the 2026 World Cup and the US Women’s Open kicking off in North America later this month, it was certainly a great opportunity for the 27-year-old to wear the non-traditional jersey on the court.

Considering his unique appearance on the training tour, Korda was asked about his decision to don the USMNT jersey and explained that it was a response to being officially named to this year’s Solheim Cup team, but also delivered a patriotic message.
“This is amazing. That’s why I’m wearing red, white and blue today. Yes, it’s always a great honor to represent my country,” Korda said. “I’m really excited to complete this challenge by playing for Ang in Amsterdam, playing for our country. I’ve always had great memories playing in the Solheim Cup and I’m looking forward to more.”

Korda had the number 13 on his jersey; It was arguably the most famous trick in US women’s soccer history, thanks to Alex Morgan rocking numbers throughout her storied career.
Morgan was reportedly hanging around the Riviera on Wednesday, but Korda explained that No. 13 was special to him on a personal level.
“This is my favorite number, so I chose 13,” Korda began. “First, there is a 13-day difference between my parents. Our second big achievement was my 13th win. Most people thought the 13th or Friday the 13th was an unlucky number, but I have always loved the number 13.

“I know the World Cup starts next week, right? There’s no better place to be patriotic than the U.S. Women’s Open.”
Korda, a three-time major champion, aims to win her first U.S. Women’s Open in California this week.
After going winless in 2025, he reeled off three wins in 2026, including the Chevron Championship, the first major tournament on the calendar. Korda finished T-2 at last year’s U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
