Harry Maguire gets £1,000 speeding fine weeks after England World Cup squad snub

England defender Harry Maguire was fined £1,000 for speeding just weeks after saying he was “shocked and gutted” to be left out of the World Cup squad.

The conviction came as his international teammates left for the United States for preparations for the 2026 men’s World Cup, creating further disappointment for the 33-year-old centre-back.

The incident occurred on December 28 last year, when Maguire was caught driving his £130,000 Range Rover at 37mph in a 30mph zone in Altringham, Greater Manchester. The route was between Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium and their Cheshire home.

The defender was tried and convicted by single justice procedure last week; At the same time, two of his Manchester United teammates were facing criminal charges for similar speeding offences.

Backup goalkeeper Altay Bayındır was caught driving a Mercedes at 60 kilometers per hour within the 30 mph limit in Manchester’s Hale Barns village on 24 November last year.

The incident occurred just before 23:00, about an hour after 28-year-old Bayındır and his teammates lost 1-0 against Everton in the Premier League.

Manchester United’s third star is Matheus Cunha, who is accused of speeding and failing to respond to police letters asking him to identify the driver of the vehicle.

Court documents show a Mercedes registered to the 27-year-old Brazilian striker was traveling at 37 miles per hour on the exact same stretch of Hale Road where Bayındır was caught speeding.

The incident occurred on the route between Old Trafford and Cunha’s home in Manchester on the opening day of United’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal on August 17 last year.

Police said Cunha was asked to identify who was driving, but he did not respond to letters and was charged with an additional offense for not providing information.

Maguire, who received a 56-day road ban for speeding in January 2025, entered a written guilty plea and was sentenced at Tameside Magistrates’ Court to be fined £1,000, three penalty points on his licence, and must also pay £120 costs and a £400 victim surcharge.

He sent a written apology, explaining: “I was driving 37 mph in what I mistakenly believed was a 40 mph zone, when in fact there was a 30 mph limit.

“I understand that this is my responsibility and I fully accept the blame. I will be more careful in the future and pay more attention to speed limit signs.”

“If possible, I would be very grateful if the court would allow me to complete a speed awareness course instead of receiving penalty points.”

Bayındır, who was called up for Türkiye’s World Cup campaign, pleaded guilty to speeding without any mitigation and was fined £666 at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, along with three penalty points, £120 costs and a £266 victim surcharge.

Court documents show no plea has been formally recorded in Cunha’s case, but an official said the striker, who is part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, faces open court in a hearing where his driving ban will be considered concurrently with the sentence.

All three United stars did not have to go to court last week as their cases were handled privately and decisions were made by a single judge based on written evidence.

Cunha could appear in court when his case is heard at Bolton Magistrates’ Court on December 16.
