Piers Morgan pays tribute to Ann Widdecombe

Piers Morgan remembers Ann Widdecombe as a “wonderful character” and “a tour de force”.

He said he was “shocked and saddened” by the news of his death, which was “a terrible way for such a wonderful character’s life to end”.

“Ann was a tour de force; opinionated, combative, fearless, principled and fiercely intelligent. She loved a good debate but was also a lot of fun. I disagreed with some of her views or policies, but she never asked me to. She believed free speech was the cornerstone of democracy,” he wrote on Instagram.

He said that they both exchanged messages from time to time, and that most recently they were both hospitalized at the same time.

“She sustained her injury while rescuing a mouse from her cat. This was typical Ann…a fiery, feisty and often hilariously funny battleaxe in the air (she would take that description as a compliment), a heart of gold in the air. It’s awful to think how sad her final moments were. My deepest condolences to all of Ann’s family. RIP.”

Arrest and release are ‘normal practice’, expert says

Police commentator Graham Wettone says it is “normal practice” for police to arrest people in such investigations and then release them when the evidence points elsewhere.

He told Sky News: “You will follow the evidence as it comes in… It was clearly a priority for them to identify this person, locate him and then arrest him.”

“That becomes the priority, so you focus on that individual, once you eliminate that, if you eliminate that, then you have to move on to your next piece of evidence again.”

He says everything they’ve found since then “clearly led them to remove him from the investigation.”

Wettone spent more than 30 years with the Met Police before retiring as a Sergeant in 2010.
