Residents in New York forced to live with nuns as rent prices skyrocket

In New York, rent prices rose so much that some tenants had to move in with the nuns.
According to Realtor.com, the average asking rent in New York City rose above US$3,616 ($5,000) for the first time this year; this is 20 percent above pre-pandemic levels.
Some monasteries charge as much as AU$2,300 per month, while others charge as little as AU$1,100; This is almost a fifth of the normal rent in the city.
Young people who started receiving salaries told Wall StreetJournal that living in monasteries was their only option.
Although monasteries are a much cheaper option, accommodation has some strict rules.
It is not necessary to be religious, but some have a curfew until 23:00 or midnight. Women’s homes forbid male visitors from entering the rooms; The same situation generally applies to alcohol.
But there are some perks, too, including free breakfast and weekly movie nights.
The nuns, some in their 90s, appear to be preparing breakfast for the household every morning.
The meal includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, fruit and juice. The building is cleaned regularly and parties are held for residents to get to know each other.
A nun who lives with her five sisters and 21 residents in a four-story, red-brick convent said she liked the layout.
“I love living with girls. They keep me young,” he told the WSJ.
