The United States is lifting decades-long sanctions on Iran without providing any guarantees against its nuclear program. We often hear Republican senators loyal to Donald Trump criticize Trump’s claims that America won the war and Iran is on the ropes. In this episode, Sarah and Anthony look at how the US president is trying to convince Republicans and US voters that allowing Iran to make billions of dollars selling oil is the right decision and that the regime will not use it for its military or nuclear programme. Will this work with Republicans in the Senate, where they just passed a measure limiting Trump’s ability to restart his war against Iran? And as Trump blames oil companies for continued high gas prices, will he be able to convince voters that the economic problems are not his fault? Plus, is New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani starting a new citywide socialist democratic movement? A group of socialist-leaning Democratic candidates he supported scored big victories in the primaries. These include candidates who want to defund the police and are critical of the mainstream Democratic establishment. Is this a model the rest of the party could follow elsewhere in the United States?
