Congress questions PM’s silence over alleged Ram temple donation theft

The Congress on Saturday (June 27, 2026) stepped up its attack on the Union government and the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged misappropriation of donations to the Ram temple in Ayodhya, questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the issue.

The party reiterated its demand for dissolution of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, senior Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh said the Prime Minister owed an explanation to devotees across the country as the Trust was created by the Union government and its members were appointed under its supervision.

“The entire nation, especially those who believe in Sanatan Dharma, want to know who stole donations worth thousands of trillions of rupees,” Mr. Singh said.

He alleged that despite serious allegations against the members of the foundation, no action was taken against them.

Congress demanded the dissolution of the Foundation and the disbandment of all those who confronted it. at first glance Detention of allegations to ensure an impartial investigation.

Mr Singh also called for an investigation under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Supreme Court.

Citing the controversy over land acquisitions in Ayodhya as well as allegations of diversion of donations, he claimed that reports of irregularities have emerged since the construction of the temple began.

He said internal investigations commissioned by the Trust into earlier allegations had been ignored and the dismissal of cash counting officer Mahipal Singh was questioned after she reportedly flagged irregularities.

Mr Singh also claimed that CCTV cameras were removed and their footage was deleted.

“The trust has lost public trust. Following reports of alleged theft, daily donations reportedly dropped from ₹ 10 lakh-₹ 15 lakh to around ₹ 80,000,” he said.

Speaking to reporters in Wayanad, Kerala, Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed the allegations “tragic” and “shameful” and said people from across the country were contributing to the temple outside of their faith.

“People from all over the country, believers and believers, donated and now those donations have been stolen. This is tragic, it is a shame and the government needs to investigate what happened, how it happened and why it happened,” he said.

Mrs Gandhi said the responsibility also lies with those spearheading the nationwide fundraising campaign.

“Women gave from their savings, the poor contributed from their homes. These are not just funds from big companies, but funds collected from ordinary citizens. If you have collected it, it is your responsibility to keep them safe,” he said.

The Congress also accused the government of applying different standards and alleged that Opposition leaders were subjected to investigations by Central agencies on “minor suspicions” but no similar action was taken against those facing allegations in the Ram temple donation case.
