SPECIAL: Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner said the Trump administration was working to offset housing cost increases that he said resulted from Joe Biden’s open border policies.
Speaking exclusively to Fox News Digital from the Great American State Fair on Thursday, Turner insisted that President Donald Trump’s team is pursuing policies aimed at improving affordability, a key midterm issue, and reducing increases in home price and rental costs that were linked to an influx of illegal immigration under the previous administration.
Republicans argued that their agenda would lower home prices and rents by reducing regulations, increasing the housing supply and preventing illegal immigration.

Turner argued that the increased housing demand resulting from unauthorized immigration increases the costs of American citizens and said, “When we first came with President Trump, our borders were open. There were tens of millions of illegals in our country.” he said.
Recently the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas worksheet reached a similar conclusion, estimating that every 1% increase in unauthorized migrant workers was associated with an increase of about 2.2% in house prices and a 1.4% increase in rents.
Beyond rolling back regulations, expanding mortgage credit and removing barriers to new construction, reducing illegal immigration is key to helping ease housing demand, Turner said.

He also said the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants is an important part of the president’s broader efforts to lower costs for American families amid the ongoing economic crisis.
“Here in America, we prioritize Americans and only Americans. American homes are for Americans,” Turner said.
When asked when Americans can expect to see lower housing costs, Turner argued that the administration is already taking steps to make housing more affordable.
“I think there’s a misperception that this isn’t a priority. It’s an extremely high-priority issue,” Turner said.
A PROBLEM HIDING IN PLACE IS PREVENTING AMERICANS FROM BUYING A HOME
As evidence, Turner cited two executive orders signed by Trump and working together. remove regulatory hurdles increasing access to affordable housing construction, mortgage loan and increasing housing supply.

The HUD Secretary said the administration is also rolling back regulations and “red tape” implemented under the Biden administration to lower construction costs and encourage more housing construction.

“That’s what we’re doing right now; we’re streamlining the regulatory environment, we’re lowering costs, we’re increasing supply so builders can build and homeowners can buy,” he said, describing those efforts as key to making homeownership more affordable for American families.
