CBSE Makes Three-Language Internal Assessment Mandatory in Classes 9-10

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made third language a compulsory qualifying subject for students in Classes 9 and 10 as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to the revised norms, which will come into force from the academic year 2027-28, students entering Class 10 will not be required to appear for the Class 10 board exam for the third language. However, in order to qualify for the Secondary School Examination Pass Certificate, they will need to pass a school-based internal assessment on the subject.
In a circular issued on July 10, CBSE clarified that although the third language, called R3, is not included in the board exam, students “must pass the school-based R3 assessment” in Class 10 to get the Class 10 passing certificate.
The board also instructed schools to re-evaluate students who did not qualify in the internal assessment before the final Grade 10 results are announced, ensuring that these students have another opportunity to meet the qualifying requirement.
Previously, CBSE was offering Class IX from July 1. It had made the study of three languages compulsory for Class X students and announced that there would be no Board examination for third language (R3) in Class X.
In a circular issued on May 15, CBSE said that as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, at least two out of three languages should be indigenous Indian languages. he stated.
