Russian strikes kill at least six across Ukraine as Kyiv comes under missile attack

Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, came under a ballistic missile attack by Russian forces early Sunday, while other areas came under bombardment later in the day that killed at least six people, local officials said.

Russia said that regions of Ukraine under Moscow control were also attacked, and that four people died in a drone attack on Ukraine’s Russian-occupied city of Horlivka.

Russia launched seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones at Ukraine overnight, Ukraine’s air force said in a morning note.

Two people, including a 9-year-old child, were killed and 25 people were injured when a Russian drone crashed into a supermarket in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, Ukrainian emergency services said.

“This is deliberate Russian terrorism with no military justification,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov told Telegram that one person died and 16 people needed medical attention in the daytime drone attack in the eastern city of Kharkiv. Separately, Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said one person was killed and six others injured in a glider bomb attack in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, which has been under heavy bombardment in recent months.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that a fire broke out on the seventh and eighth floors of a multi-storey apartment block in a central area following the missile attack overnight. Three people were injured in the capital and images released by state emergency services showed vehicles engulfed in flames.

National oil and gas company Naftogaz said two of its employees were killed in a Russian attack in Sloviansk, one of several targets of Russia’s slow advance in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, as they tried to help residents affected by an earlier attack.

Zelenskiy warned on Friday that Russian attacks could occur within the next 48 hours.

In the city of Horlivka in the Russian-occupied part of the Donetsk region, Russian-appointed Mayor Ivan Prikhodko said that four civilians were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack. Prikhodko later said a Ukrainian drone crashed into the emergency vehicle, injuring three paramedics and another resident.

On Saturday, Russian-appointed officials accused Ukraine of deliberately attacking civilians after 12 people were killed in a drone strike on a Russian-held holiday camp in Ukraine’s Zaporozhye region.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the war, which was launched by Russia’s all-out invasion in February 2022. Thousands of civilians, mostly Ukrainians, died in Russian attacks.
