More than half of UK births now involve medical intervention, audit finds | Women’s health

More than half of the women who have a baby in the UK are now doing this with the help of medical intervention, and NHS has demonstrated a control of motherhood care.

50.6% out of 592,594 births in 2023 include the use of instruments such as cesarean or forceps or ventous suction cups.

Experts said that the increase in medical supported deliveries has become more complex in recent years and represents a “great change” because it has a baby of older or obese women.

The increasing regularity of the medical intervention depends largely on the sharp increase in cesarean births in which the baby is given during an operation.

According to the National Birth and Perinatal Audit (NMPA), which is a cooperation between birth doctors, midwives and academics, the proportion of infants born in England, Scotland and Wales increased to 25.9% in 2015-16 to 38.9% in 2023.

Although the ratio of induced births is less dramatic, it increased from 29.3% to 33.9%. However, the ratio using forceps or Ventouse cups decreased from 12.3% to 11.1% in the same period.

Dr. Shuby Puthussery said: “More than 50% of births are worried that medical intervention will contain. However, it is linked to a wider demographic tendency.

“We see a very worrying birth tendency [older] Women who have increased every year with significant increases in factors such as obesity, material diabetes and pre -existing medical situations, especially women from ethnic minority groups and those who live in poverty, lead to more complex births. “

He said prenatal care, especially better access to scans, problems to identify problems earlier and reduce the risk of mothers who need medical assistance while labor.

Prof Asma Khalil, Vice President of Royal Women’s Hanci College and Gynecologists (RCOG), decided that cesarean women have increased the risk faced.

“Cesarean births are common, and as long as future services are well prepared to ensure that they have the right personnel, training and facilities to manage gradually complex births, a stable increase is not necessarily a cause of concern.

“The cesarean delivery rate in the UK has increased in the last decade. A factor of this is the increasing rate of complex pregnancies.

“National rising obesity rates and people who choose to have children at a later stage of their lives, both can increase their chances of complications.”

In the report, he said: “There are risks and benefits for both vaginal and cesarean delivery modes, and a planned or unplanned cesarean delivery may include physical or psychological benefits.

“While unnecessary interventions can lead to negative consequences, it is important to state that there is no ‘ideal’ ratio for births by caesarean section.”

In 2023, a total of 23.1% of the births were planned for emergency caesarean section and 16.4%.

It has confirmed that fertility rates have fallen sharply in recent years. The number of births in England and Wales has been stable since 2012 and has seen the lowest number since 2023 1977. The fertility rate in England and Wales is now 1.44 children per woman.

Scotland noted the lowest total fertility in 2023. The ratio there fell only 1.3 babies per woman.

NHS was asked to comment from England.
