Police employee, officers facing criminal charges

A police officer is facing serious charges following a 40-mile highway chase, one of many alleged off-duty criminal incidents.

Two NSW officers and a civilian employee have been charged in connection with three separate incidents, two of which involved domestic violence, police said on Saturday.

In the first, a Mercedes wagon allegedly failed to stop after it was spotted speeding on the Hume Highway in Goulburn on Friday morning.

Police tracked the car for 65km before tire deflation devices were deployed near the Federal Highway at Yarra.

Police were allegedly preparing a second set of road stakes a short distance away when the driver suddenly turned towards officers before righting the vehicle and continuing on.

The disabled vehicle stopped on the highway a short time later and a 26-year-old male off-duty police officer from the South West Metropolitan Area was arrested.

He was charged with police pursuit, reckless driving, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km per hour, use of an offensive weapon to prevent lawful custody and possession of a prescribed prohibited substance.

His license was confiscated and he was suspended from duty without pay.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Goulburn Local Court on July 15.

In the second incident, on Saturday, a 59-year-old sergeant from the Northern Region command was charged with intentional damage for domestic violence.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Monday.

Police said his employment status is under review.

A police employee attached to the Northern Territory command was also charged with domestic violence-related offences.

The 44-year-old woman was charged Friday with three counts of harassment, assault causing actual bodily harm, common assault, false imprisonment and intentional strangulation.

The operating status is being reviewed.

He was given conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on July 14.
