Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the awardees of the Bhavya Bharat Bhushan Awards during Mahashivratri celebrations in Coimbatore on Sunday, February 15, 2026. The awards were organized by Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation.
However, the presence of uniformed defense personnel at a private event sparked controversy, with some retired officers objecting. Major General BS Dhanoa (retired) said military officers can attend special functions “as long as they are not wearing uniform”.
“If they were to receive an award, they could receive it in civilian clothes. Wearing a military uniform and going to a special event does not suit the apolitical character of the army,” he said.
Lieutenant General DS Hooda (retired) said officers cannot refuse to attend an event where the Defense Minister is present. “(But) in my view, political leaders should ensure that uniformed personnel are not invited to tasks that might raise questions about their conduct or professionalism,” he said.
At the ceremony, a moment of silence was paid to the Indian Armed Forces for their role in Operation Sindoor. Three major operational commands – Western Air Command, Indian Army’s Southern Command and Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command – were felicitated in recognition of what the Defense Minister described as the “outstanding success” of the operation.
Senior officers, including Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra of the Indian Air Force, Lieutenant General AVS Rathee of the Indian Army and Vice Admiral RV Gokhale of the Indian Navy, were appreciated for their leadership and dedication during duty.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Singh drew parallels between Lord Shiva and the armed forces. “Just as Lord Shiva represents both protection and destruction, our armed forces today carry within themselves both fearlessness and patience,” he said.
The Isha Foundation organized the awards to honor individuals who have made significant contributions in fields such as national security, business, arts and entertainment, sports, community welfare, science and technology, literature and academia.
