The appointment of Anant M. Ambani as full-time executive director of Reliance Industries Ltd. received strong support from shareholders, receiving 94.4% approval, the company announced on Sunday.
He is the youngest son of RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani and has been the full-time executive director of the conglomerate for a period of five years since May 1, 2025. Prior to this appointment, he was a non-executive director on the board of Reliance.
Brown University graduate Anant Ambani is known for his work in animal welfare; It supports initiatives focused on the rehabilitation of at-risk animals and ensures care and dignity in their later years. In recognition of his philanthropic efforts, he was named the youngest and first Asian recipient of the 2025 Global Humanitarian Award by the Global Humane Society.
Previous positions in the company
Before his current role, Anant Ambani served as a non-executive director on the board of Reliance. He also sits on the boards of various Reliance group companies such as Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail Ventures, Reliance New Energy and Reliance New Solar Energy. He is also a board member of Reliance Foundation since September 2022.
Anant Ambani’s most notable work is Vantara, a massive 3,000-acre wildlife conservation and rehabilitation initiative located within the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery Complex in Gujarat, India.
Meanwhile, Anant’s siblings Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani are currently serving as non-executive directors on the Reliance Board. Akash is also the chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the group’s telecom and digital services arm, and Isha is an executive director at Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd, the group’s retail arm.
Youngest full-time director RIL
Anant M. Ambani serves as the youngest full-time executive of Reliance Industries. His appointment has previously been the subject of controversy due to concerns about his age and level of previous leadership experience.
In early 2023, Institutional Shareholder Services Inc., an international proxy advisory firm, recommended shareholders vote against the board appointment, citing concerns about his age, according to a report by Bloomberg News.
“A vote against this decision is necessary as Anant Ambani’s limited leadership/board experience of approximately six years raises concerns about his potential contribution to the board,” the report stated, as quoted by ISS. However, the proxy advisory firm supported the appointment of Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani.
However, another international proxy firm, Glass Lewis, supported Anant’s appointment. “We are not singling out Anant Ambani from the other brothers based on experience,” Decky Windarto, director of Asia-Pacific Research at Glass Lewis, said in the report. “We noted that the other two principals selected for selection were only three years older than Anant and had similar professional experience,” he added.
