Andy Burnham reveals plan for Donald Trump as ‘special relationship’ on brink | Politics | News

Andy Burnham has revealed his plans for Donald Trump as the UK-US “special relationship” teeters on the brink. Speaking on Gary Lineker’s podcast, the incoming Prime Minister and former Mayor of Manchester said he remained optimistic he could handle the US President.

But Mr. Burnham said Mr. Trump’s description of himself as “the mayor of a town” could cause some backlash. He said: “I’ll meet him where he’s at. I like to think I’ve got a personality too, and I’ll deal with him in the same open way. I think he likes people to take care of him.” Mr Burnham continued: “When he was talking about my position he described Manchester as a town. “You know how the Mancs are, Gary, that wouldn’t go down well in the town I represent.

“But it’s about being yourself, isn’t it? It’s about respecting the office and the UK-US relationship. But where you disagree, do it in a way that meets him where he’s at.”

He called on Mr Burnham to start buying oil from the North Sea, while again criticizing Sir Keir for not giving him enough support in the Iran war.

Asked what he thought of the new Prime Minister, Mr Trump described him as “extremely liberal”. He said: “I don’t know, I think I see him being the mayor of a town.

“I gave Keir Starmer some pretty good advice. I said open the North Sea, go to Aberdeen, the hottest city on the whole continent. It was the oil city of Europe and they closed everything down. It was terrible. I couldn’t believe it.”

“The North Sea is full, I wanted all the oil companies to come see me ‘Sir, can you give us access to the UK? We’ll do anything to drill in the North Sea.’

“The interesting thing is they get their oil from Norway, which gets it from the North Sea. Think about it, and they pay a huge premium.”

“Norway has two trillion dollars in the bank now and the UK is dying, so they should open up the North Sea and it’ll be an easy job and a lot of good things will happen. It’s one of the biggest deals in the world.”
