AP Eyes UK Partnership For Sustainable Urban Growth

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh is in talks with the UK to explore cooperation in energy, green mobility and sustainable infrastructure, as well as attracting global investments and advanced technologies to the state.

A high-level meeting in Amaravati on Thursday brought together senior state government officials and a UK delegation led by Chaz Walia, director of partnerships, department of business and trade (UK), and Gareth Wynn Owen, deputy high commissioner, British Hyderabad, and two industry experts.

The discussions were chaired by Suresh Kumar, principal secretary of the municipal administration and urban development department. Senior officials including CRDA commissioner, AGICL managing director, APADCL chairman and other commissioners of CRDA were also present.

The two sides explored cooperation in the areas of energy production and transmission, sustainable urban transportation systems, green mobility initiatives, riverside development and sports infrastructure. Emerging urban solutions, especially district cooling systems that aim to increase energy efficiency in cities, also came to the fore in the negotiations.

The focus of the discussions was on financing mechanisms for large-scale infrastructure projects. The UK delegation explained different financing models, including foreign exchange financing frameworks, and highlighted the increasing importance of Public-Private Partnership models in mobilizing private investment for sustainable development projects.

The State reiterated its commitment to creating a strong pipeline of sustainable and investment-ready projects, positioning AP as an attractive destination for international partners and investors.

Tourism promotion and knowledge sharing partnerships were also discussed; Both sides agreed to strengthen institutional cooperation and facilitate the exchange of expertise across sectors.

Chief Secretary Suresh Kumar stated that AP is keen to build result-oriented international partnerships that can accelerate sustainable urban growth, improve infrastructure quality and enhance public service delivery.

A follow-up meeting is expected shortly to take forward specific proposals and areas of collaboration identified during the interaction, officials said.
