The newly published home office data draw a mixed picture of how the government’s asylum seeker strategy works.

The number of seekers hosted in hotels – An existing political glare point – When he came to power, he rose slightly. However, the figures are far below the 2023 summit while conservatives are in the government.

Number of asylum applications in the UK in June In addition, 111,000 has reached a new record – The government has reduced the accumulation of claims by processing faster.

In addition, until June, the British shores landed about 38% smaller than the previous year.

BBC reporters Jack Fenwick and Dominic Casciani evaluate us what the figures say to us about the effectiveness of the government’s asylum strategy.

The strategy may be working, but the long way to continue

Since the Labor Party came to power, the titles of the increase in the use of asylum practices and the increase in hotel use do not make a comfortable reading for ministers.

However, on Thursday morning, the general opinion at the Ministry of Interior “was” disappointed “according to a source.

And behind these headings, there is evidence that the elements of the government’s strategy can work.

This is the first data to take into account the major increase in small boat transitions since March.

A few months ago, some people in the house office were worried that the use of hotel may increase as a result.

But that didn’t happen. The number of asylum seekers in hotels actually fell slightly between March and June.

Ministers are trying to find alternative accommodation resources such as normal houses and apartments in communities – but these numbers did not increase.

By processing the allegations faster, the Ministry of the Interior was able to ensure that the major increase in small boat transitions did not have much effect on asylum accommodation.

It was a hostage of workers who ended the use of hotels, and the ministers have a long, long way before approaching reaching.

However, they now hope that they break the connection between the transitions of small boats and the use of hotel use.

Opposition parties give this claim in a short time.

They say that the government’s illegal immigration record will ultimately be evaluated according to the stubborn, record -breaking high -breaking small boat transition numbers.

Shadow Interior Minister Chris Philp claims that if his party had been planned to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, the figures would be zero.

The accounts of the Ministry of Interior, published last month, show that conservatives are about 1,000 civil servants working in the Rwanda plan.

He scrapped the idea of workers and a high -level home office source says that they could accelerate the first asylum practices by carrying most of these staff to that team.

The same source also tried to shift some of the political advancing to the Ministry of Justice (MOJ).

While the first asylum claims are processed faster, there is an increasing concern about what happened in the appeal courts.

Data in March 2025 show a record appeal applications against unsuccessful asylum applications.

“The courts are definitely a pinch of the office, and we need to help Moj’s step and help us.”

A former Justice Secretary told us that such appeal was usually caused by the Ministry of Interior from the Ministry of Interior during the first application stage.

In the coming months, there is a clear potential between the two parts of the government for tension.

Last hotel use is still a big challenge

The aim of the government is to convince the people that the immigration and asylum system has better and more control than their predecessors – and thanks to the rise of reform, he knows that he should send a signal that he is moving in the right direction even if he does not achieve his goals.

Therefore, these statistics are complex for both themselves and their competitors – and why both sides will emphasize different aspects.

The good news for the government is that the authorities take decisions about asylum applications faster than before.

As of June, there were 91,000 cases in the accumulation of asylum. This fell fifth in a year – and almost half of the summit two years ago.

The smaller the accumulated work, the less expenditure of the government. The total shelter invoice fell from £ 5.4 billion to £ 2024-25 in the previous year.

But now for bad news.

More people are said to be attractive against this decision. There are approximately 51,000 appeals before shelter and immigrant judges. These people are stuck in the system until they won their objections or a final decision to be issued.

And this is part of the home office’s only part of a modest progress on the use of hotels – the organizations brought by the last government after the end of the alternative accommodation throughout the country.

The government may indicate that at the end of the process, it increases the removal process from the UK. However, more than half of the lifting is not failed asylum applicants, but foreign national criminals are leaving the prison.

The removal of small boat immigrants are modest and many of them are legally low fruits, such as the short phenomenon of the rush of Albanian citizens.

Most importantly – and a gain for this government – the number of people who voluntarily increased by 13% to 26,761. It is usually paid to £ 3,000 to go – but it is much cheaper than fighting the courts.

The other four critical factors will play a major role in this difficulty.

The government’s plan to strengthen the opposing gang forces is still in Parliament. TBC is about whether it works.

The ministers expect the French to stop the separation of the shore and stop a separate German commitment to change their laws, so that the boats can take over the storage there.

The last factor is based on global events. If people feel insecure, they will continue to leave their homes around the world to come to Europe.

All of this must come together and move forward in the right direction to meet the government’s commitment to end the use of hotels at the end of the parliament.
