Back pay for federal workers coming

Refunds to be paid to federal employees for the time they are furloughed during the government shutdown are expected to be transferred to their bank accounts early next week, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Thursday.

“There’s been a really aggressive effort to get people to get their checks as quickly as possible,” Hassett told reporters a day after President Donald Trump signed a short-term funding bill that allows the government to reopen in 43 days.

“I think the payments will probably come in early next week,” Hassett said as hundreds of thousands of federal workers return to their offices.

The timing of payments may be affected depending on the institutions where employees work.

Under federal law, state employees furloughed during the shutdown must be paid “at the earliest practicable date, regardless of their scheduled payment date,” at standard pay rates for the time they are unemployed.

NBC News, citing a senior administration official, reported that the White House is “calling on” government agencies to ensure workers receive back pay quickly and accurately.

“Super checks” for salaries from October 1 to November 1 are expected to be sent to employees as of Saturday. General Services Management And Office of Personnel Managementthe official said, according to NBC.

The super checks are expected to arrive in the bank accounts of employees in the Energy, Health and Human Services, Defense and Human Services departments on Sunday. Veterans Affairssaid the official.

On Monday, employees of the Education, Interior, Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency (NSA) departments. The Social Security Administration and some other agencies are expected to receive super checks.

Employees at the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Homeland Security, Justice, Labor and Treasury, as well as the Small Business Administration, are also expected to receive super checks.

A person with knowledge of the situation told CNBC that Senate staffers will receive the first paycheck they missed during the shutdown on Friday, and the second missed paycheck on Monday.

Domestic workers received notice that they should receive their back pay on Tuesday or Wednesday if their accounts are with smaller banks.

Transport Minister Sean Duffy said earlier this week that air traffic controllers should receive 70% of their remaining wages this week, with the rest due next week.

“I was really happy to see some of my furloughed employees come in today and there were so many hugs and smiles,” Hassett said Thursday.
