GM to move production of China-built Buick SUV to U.S. plant

DETROIT — General Engines It plans to move production of the Buick compact SUV from China to the United States for domestic sales, the company confirmed Thursday.

GM said the next-generation vehicle is expected to be produced starting in 2028 at the automaker’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The Buick compact SUV, which will be produced in the US, will be sold domestically, which means production of the vehicle in China may continue for sale elsewhere.

The move comes as President Donald Trump is pressuring companies to move production onshore and the relationship between the United States and China has become increasingly contentious, including tariffs on vehicles.

The Detroit automaker has been producing the compact Buick Envision SUV in China for the United States since 2017. However, the company refused to confirm the next-generation name of the vehicle when it will be brought to the US.

“General Motors will conduct on-ground production of the next-generation Buick compact SUV at Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City starting in 2028. This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports jobs in the United States, building on the $5.5 billion in new investment in our U.S. manufacturing facilities announced last year,” GM said in an emailed statement.

Compact Buick is expected to join production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox at its Kansas plant, following limited production of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt. GM said Equinox production will begin in 2027.

Envision’s US sales have surpassed 40,000 units in the last three years; this represents roughly a quarter of Buick’s sales during that period.
