A heated confrontation took place in Evanston, Illinois, on Wednesday; where he confronted city Mayor Daniel Biss, a progressive Democrat and congressional candidate, Border Patrol Commander. Gregory Bovino during a street-level Title 8 immigration enforcement operation that drew “several dozen” protesters and quickly turned chaotic, according to videos and accounts posted on X.
The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. near Green Bay Road and Dodge Boulevard in the city outside Chicago, where an 11-vehicle Border Patrol convoy arrived to detain several people. Eyewitness Mark Weyermuller wrote that agents “detained at least two people” as the crowd formed.
In the video shared by FOX 32 Chicago reporter Paris Schutz, Biss, dressed in a dark tailored coat and dress shoes, can be seen visibly standing out from the assembled crowd, stepping directly toward Bovino as protesters shout and whistle around them.
Biss immediately confronted him, saying: “Abuse is unacceptable. Racism is unacceptable. Violence is unacceptable.”

“Yes, that’s why we’re here in your community,” replied Bovino, surrounded by agents wearing protective masks and tactical gear.
A nearby protester then repeatedly shouted at the commander: “Hey Bovino, we don’t want you here, bro! We don’t want you!”
As the shouting intensified, scores of protesters tried to block the road, while Evanston and Chicago police tried to keep a corridor open for vehicles to leave the area.

Biss, who ran for Congress as a “pragmatic progressive,” later amplified his criticism in a post about X, writing, “The only ‘violent gang’ in Evanston today was Greg Bovino and his masked thugs who terrorized innocent people and then lied about our city to sow chaos.”
He added that Evanston “is safe despite ICE/CBP, not because of ICE/CBP,” praised residents who “chase you out of town,” and concluded by saying, “Don’t come back.”
Bovino disputed Biss’ claims and described the encounter as productive.

He wrote that the agents were in Evanston “to make his city a safer place through Title 8 immigration enforcement,” and said the mayor was “returning to the divisive talking points we hear ad nauseam.” Bovino called it a “perfect day in Evanston.”
The Evanston Police Department and the Chicago Police Department assisted with crowd control and ensuring federal vehicles could exit safely, Bovino said. In the video, police officers direct traffic and create space as protesters try to approach the convoy.

Title 8 It is the federal legal framework for immigration enforcement and may include operations away from the border where agents conduct investigations or target specific individuals.
Wednesday’s conflict reflects growing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and leadership in Democratic-run communities.
