Budget week — and maybe Labor’s gambling response?

One of the most ceremonial events in Canberra, it is designed to give the government a major publicity campaign, as well as a day’s notice to start building the narrative about the nation’s finances. That’s right, budget week is here again.

As usual, the budget will be announced on Tuesday evening. Treasurer Jim Chalmers is expected to present his fifth budget in the House of Representatives at 7.30pm (all times in this story are AEST).

This will be the signal for journalists locked in internet-free rooms in parliament and elsewhere to emerge with the stories they have been preparing throughout the day.
