A despicable care home worker who filmed himself sexually assaulting elderly women with dementia who were trusted to care for him has been jailed for 15 years. Crooked David Jones, 53, targeted extremely vulnerable pensioners in his “disgusting” harassment campaign, locking himself in their rooms and filming some of his actions.

One victim was unable to speak and could not explain what had happened to him, while the family of the other noticed the “fear in his eyes” but said his concerns were dismissed by care home bosses as merely signs of advancing dementia.

In 2025, staff became increasingly concerned about Jones’ behavior towards certain residents. A colleague noted that Jones visited a resident much more frequently than necessary and neglected to check on others under his care. On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Jones was working the night shift with two colleagues at a care facility in East Kent.

Around 3 a.m., concerned for the resident’s welfare, staff followed Jones to the victim’s room. When they opened the door, they found him behaving inappropriately towards the residents. He was immediately confronted and instructed to leave the room, and the victim was placed in the care of other staff.

Staff reported the incident to Kent Police and officers attended Jones’ home less than 24 hours later. They arrested him on suspicion of having sexual intercourse with a person without consent. During his detention, he was searched and a mobile phone was confiscated.

Canterbury Crown Court heard on Friday Jones was caught with his trousers down in one of the victims’ rooms by a colleague and a search of his phone revealed the extent of his crimes.

Police identified a second victim using footage taken of Jones while he was sexually assaulting her. Police also found indecent images of children and “numerous” images of suspected care home victims who have not yet been identified.

Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a mentally impaired person obstructing choice, sexual activity with a mentally impaired person by a care worker and possession of indecent images of children.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and given an additional four years on license by the Recorder of Canterbury, Judge Simon James.

Jones will serve his entire 15-year sentence in prison unless he can convince the Parole Board that it is safe for him to be released after at least 10 years. The judge told him: “Both of your elderly victims were particularly vulnerable, with one lacking the capacity to consent and the other unable to communicate or make a complaint because he was non-verbal.

“They were both entrusted to your care, and targeting them for your twisted sexual gratification was as disgusting a breach of trust as you can imagine.”

The children of one of the elderly victims said there were warning signs of abuse by Jones and accused nursing home management of failing to properly investigate. They said they were “relieved” to know Jones was now behind bars and thanked prosecutors and police for “bringing this depraved individual to justice.”

They said in a statement: “Our mother experienced extreme fear, pain and distress, yet lacked the capacity to report, let alone process, what was repeatedly done to her.”

The family said they noticed a “rapid deterioration” in their mother’s health, including bruising, broken bones and “fear in her eyes”, and raised concerns about the care home’s management even before Jones’ abuse was revealed.

“We were dismissed, treated as if we were overprotective, and told that his fear and deterioration were due to dementia,” the statement said.

“This allowed Jones to escape further abuse until further alarm was raised by the tipster who caught him red-handed.”

The family said they had come to terms with the decision to trust the care home and were disappointed that it still received a “good” rating from the Care Quality Commission despite the criminal investigation and Jones’ abuse.

In sentencing, Judge James said it was “almost impossible to quantify the psychological damage suffered by your victims” but recognized the “feelings of betrayal and understandable anger of those who entrusted their loved ones to your care”.

Alan Collins, partner at law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp, who acted on behalf of the family in the civil damages case against the care home, said after the sentencing: “This appalling case highlights the need for robust scrutiny, recruitment and monitoring of care home staff and the importance of carrying out thorough investigations when families raise concerns, as well as providing reporting training to all staff.”

Detective Sergeant Richard Allingham, of Kent Police, said: “Rather than fulfilling his duty of care, Jones used vulnerable women for his own sexual gratification. His actions were deplorable and a profound breach of trust.”

“I welcome the sentence handed down by the court today and would like to thank the victim’s families for their courage and support throughout this investigation.”
