Central Jail’s Production Units Boost Inmates’ Skills; Profits Increase

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Central Prison runs ten prison -based production units that equip prisoners with professional skills that can help them find a job after being released.

These units focus on steel furniture production, weaving and painting, tailoring, library, dry cleaning, phenolil production, oven goods, printing, agriculture and dairy.

Currently, five of these industries have made a profit, but contributed to the sustainability of the institution and played an important role in the rehabilitation of prisoners. In 2024-25 financially, the steel furniture unit appeared as a lead unit and produced 1.35 Crore and produced 17 lakh profits.

The weaving and painting unit also made significant contributions, produced 15 lakh goods and made 1.6 lakh profits.

The oven unit provided delicious products with the total production value La 15.3 Lakh and La 2 Lakh. The agricultural unit added 5.8 Lakh in production and recorded a 76,000 ° snow. The milk unit received a production of 44 lakh and a profit of 3.2 lakh.

Prison Inspector M. Mash Babu told Deccan Chronicle: “These figures are only more than the figures. While nurturing the development of skills, they represent the increasing success of our production units. We balance the operational costs, but also to balance operational costs.

He said that prisoners were encouraged to participate in various professions according to their skills and preferences. After transmitting their interests, their behavior is carefully monitored to evaluate their compliance with certain roles.

Mash Babu said, “For example, suppose that a prisoner wants to work in agriculture. His behavior is closely monitored during imprisonment. Only those who show a positive transformation are allowed to enter agricultural studies. Prisoners who have undergone an important transformation to participate in studies such as agriculture.” He said.

“Many prisoners who were released are engaged in agricultural affairs and their sentences were reduced due to their positive behavior during their imprisonment here,” he said.
