Christian Eriksen collapses during Denmark-Ukraine match, game abandoned

Denmark’s Christian Eriksen collapsed during his team’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday.
Eriksen, who has a history of fainting on the field, experienced it again when help arrived to meet him near midfield.
Fortunately, the Danish Football Association said in a statement that he was “conscious and feeling well under the circumstances.” The incident experienced by the 34-year-old football player caused the match to be cancelled.

With Eriksen’s injury, Denmark defeated Ukraine 2-1 in the 61st minute.
Eriksen previously played for Tottenham and Manchester United in the English Premier League. He currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in the 2. Bundesliga.

During the European Championship between Denmark and Finland in June 2021, games were suspended after the horrific scene in the first half of the match when Eriksen suffered a heart attack on the field.
Play came to an immediate halt at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium, where Eriksen lay unresponsive on the grass. CPR was needed to revive him as medical staff and teammates circled around his body in obvious distress, hoping for the best.

After 10 minutes of medical intervention, Eriksen was taken off the field on a stretcher with an oxygen mask placed over his mouth. At that time, images began circulating on social media showing Eriksen awake and holding his hand to his forehead.
Eriksen was later transported to the hospital and his condition was stabilized.
From then on, Eriksen was fitted with a heart-stimulating device called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, released a statement through multiple channels saying Eriksen’s “pacemaker is responding as it should.”

“He was unconscious for a short time, but he regained consciousness very quickly and we quickly contacted him,” Boesen’s statement said.
“He will not undergo further examination at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. However, Christian is in a stable condition and has asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he is fine.”
