A man who planned a terror attack with his friend, who carried out a fatal knife attack on a synagogue in Manchester less than two months later, has been jailed for at least 17 years. Mohammed Bashir, described as a “long-standing, dedicated jihadist” as the prosecution laid out the case against him at Manchester Crown Court yesterday, took Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, on a 10-hour round trip to conduct hostile reconnaissance at the UK Defense Academy at Shrivenham in Swindon on August 14 last year, Manchester Crown Court heard.

On October 2, two men were killed in a separate incident as worshipers gathered at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue to commemorate Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews. Al-Shamie, a Syrian-born British citizen who wore a fake suicide belt, was shot dead by police in front of the building.
