Andhra Pradesh Prisons Department, in collaboration with Visakhapatnam Skill Development Institute (SDI), launched an IT-based skill development course titled “Office Assistant” at Visakhapatnam Central Jail on Thursday. The program was inaugurated by Visakhapatnam District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore.

The initiative aims to equip prisoners with industry-focused IT and office management skills as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The first batch will consist of 30 inmates, primarily remand prisoners, and will focus especially on young inmates involved in NDPS-related cases, officials said. The two-month course will provide practical training in computer applications, office management, digital communication, use of office equipment and employability skills. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate from SDI Visakhapatnam.

The course also aims to improve digital literacy, communication skills, workplace discipline and self-confidence among prisoners to increase employment opportunities after release.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kishore appreciated the efforts of the Department of Prisons and SDI in providing reform-oriented programs for inmates. He said skills development initiatives in prisons could play an important role in transforming lives and creating constructive opportunities to rebuild the future.

The collector then interacted with the inmates participating in the program and visited prison industries and skill development departments in the prison facilities.
