Ruling National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah on Sunday (February 22, 2026) expressed concern over the “continued delay” in restoring full statehood in Jammu and Kashmir.
In his statement, Mr. Abdullah said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir waited patiently and trusted in democratic institutions, but the promise of restoring the state was not fulfilled.
He emphasized that statehood is not a privilege, but a constitutional right that reflects the democratic aspirations and identity of the people.
“Repeated assurances were given at the highest levels that the state would be restored as soon as possible. However, the lack of a clear timeline has created uncertainty and disappointment among the public.” he said.
The National Conference (NC) president argued that restoring the state would strengthen democratic governance, ensure greater accountability and empower elected representatives to address public concerns.
Abdullah called on the Center to fulfill its commitment without further delay and take concrete steps towards restoration of full statehood.
He said that protection of democratic rights and constitutional guarantees was essential for lasting peace, stability and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
