Cough syrup deaths: Sresan Pharma owner Ranganathan sent to 10-day police custody

A court in Madhya Pradesh sent Sresan Pharma owner Ranganathan to 10-day police custody in connection with the deaths of children allegedly caused by Coldrif cough syrup.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a PIL seeking inquiry and systematic reform in drug safety mechanisms following deaths of children allegedly due to consumption of toxic cough syrups in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and K Vinod Chandran dismissed the PIL application filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected.
The senior legal official said the petitioner was reading newspaper and hurriedly went to the court.

The board, which initially thought that the notification should be published, later rejected this warning.

Mehta said that while it is not visible in any state at the moment, the seriousness of states like Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh taking action cannot be ignored. Moreover, he added, there are proper law enforcement mechanisms in the states. The bench asked Tiwari how many PILs he had filed in the top court so far and on being told that he had filed eight to 10 such pleas so far, the bench dismissed the instant petition.

Cough syrups under the scanner:
While the World Health Organization has sought an explanation from India over the recent deaths of children, allegedly after drinking poisoned syrup, the central drug regulatory agency is set to launch nationwide inspections and inspections of cough syrup manufacturing units.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), as part of its drive to ensure stricter quality control, has asked all states and union territories to provide a list of cough syrup manufacturers in their jurisdiction for inspection and surveillance, people aware of the development said.
