Cowboys legend Michael Irvin wins over booing Eagles fans at Philly bar ahead of Home Run Derby

This isn’t your grandfather’s Philadelphia.
Nearly 27 years ago, Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin lay motionless on the concrete jungle surface of Veterans Stadium for the last time. He was carried away on a stretcher to the cheers of Eagles fans who watched the rival who had dominated them for more than a decade recover from a spinal cord injury.
Irvin’s football career was over.
PHILLIES STAR SAYS ‘BS RULE’ PREVENTS HIM FROM CALLING AN ALL-STAR IN FRONT OF HOME PEOPLE
On Sunday, Irvin returned to Philly and ignored fans booing him as he put on his jersey at a local bar. It’s good for business. The Quarterback returns to the City of Brotherly Love, not as a villain, but as a guest podcaster/influencer for tonight’s MLB All-Star Game Home Run Derby.
Is Irvin an odd choice for a baseball event? Sure, but if you’re going to deliberately fire up Philly fans, Irvin is a smart foil. It wants heat.
“It was a compliment to Philly to cheer me up.” Years later, the Quarterback said this about Eagles fans: The person cheering after being kicked out in 1999. “Philly wasn’t cheering for my injury. They were cheering for my departure,” he added. “Thank God he’s leaving the field, he’s killing us. Thank God, maybe we have a chance to win now. You’ve never heard me say anything negative about Philadelphia fans.”

Irvin, 60, has brought that same mentality to McGillins Olde Ale House in Center City Philly.
“Eagles fans know tough when they see it,” one fan wrote on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Instagram account as he walked in and picked up the ball.
“I love this. As a 45 year old Philadelphian, from start to finish. I love seeing this 2nd act of Michael Irving. Keep inspiring. Even though you may have heard the boos, I know you can feel the respect and love,” another fan wrote.

But at the end of the day, these fans were literally cheering when it looked like Irvin would suffer a potentially life-changing injury during the 1999 season. Regardless, Irvin didn’t dwell on the actions of Eagles fans.

“I remember my dad, and a lot of these fans are just like my dad.” Irvin was recalled in 2013. “The only time and place their opinions matter is the only way they can express their frustrations, and I can be okay with that.”

And now, it appears the feeling is mutual. We’ve all lived long enough for Eagles fans to find a soft spot for one of their hated enemies.
