DHS blasts California sanctuary policies after hit-and-run suspect freed

Federal immigration officials slammed California’s asylum policies Tuesday after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested an illegal immigrant accused of seriously injuring a 4-year-old child in a hit-and-run crash.
Aman Kumar, an Indian citizen living illegally in the United States, was arrested by ICE on May 13 after being released from local custody.
Kumar was first arrested last month for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run crash, according to the Fresno Sheriff’s Department. He was charged with hit-and-run causing death or bodily injury.
Police said Kumar was driving a vehicle that hit a 4-year-old child in Fresno, California, KSEE reported.

Authorities said the boy was playing on a swing set in a nearby backyard before exiting through a gate and entering the road.
Investigators said multiple vehicles stopped after seeing the boy on the street, but Kumar used the bike lane to weave around stopped traffic before hitting the boy.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the child is in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.

DHS criticized California’s sanctuary policies after Kumar was later released from prison.
“This monster, who nearly killed a 4-year-old child, has been charged with hit-and-run,” DHS deputy secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. he said.
“The Sanctuary politicians in California released this criminal, illegal alien from prison and onto the streets,” he continued. “Thanks to the brave men and women of ICE law enforcement, this criminal, illegal alien was apprehended before a criminal court.”

According to DHS, Kumar entered the United States illegally in 2023 and was later released under the Biden administration.
The department also noted a letter ICE Director Todd Lyons sent to California Attorney General Rob Bonta in February urging the state to honor ICE detainees, which includes more than 33,000 undocumented immigrants in custody across California.
“DHS is calling on Governor Gavin Newsom and sanctuary politicians in California to stop putting American lives at risk by releasing criminals into our communities to commit more crimes and harm more innocent people,” Bis said.
California’s failure to honor ICE detainees has resulted in the release of 4,561 undocumented immigrants without criminal charges or convictions since Jan. 20, DHS said.

The ministry said these people were accused of crimes such as murder, assault, theft, drug crimes, weapons crimes and sexual crimes.
