More than a foot of rain has fallen in rural Missouri since Thursday evening. Somewhere near Redmondville, Missouri – St. About 70 miles southwest of St. Louis – 12.25 inches of rain have been measured since Thursday evening.

More than 30 centimeters of rain in less than 24 hours means this highly localized and ongoing event is at least a once-in-1,000-year flood for the region. Under normal conditions, the probability of this rainfall rate occurring in a given year is only 0.1%. But such extreme precipitation is becoming more common as pollution causing the planet to warm up raises temperatures further as warm air holds more moisture.

Friday’s heavy rain is just the beginning of a multi-day flood threat expected to affect areas from the Mid-Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys to the central Appalachians throughout this weekend.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
