Eggs, shoes hurled at TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee during visit to post-poll violence victims’ families in Bengal

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly manhandled by locals while he was visiting West Bengal’s Sonarpur district (May 30, 2026) to meet families of victims of post-election violence, police said.

While chanting ‘thief’ slogans at Mr. Banerjee, unidentified persons hurled stones, shoes and eggs at the TMC MP and even attempted to shower blows and kicks.

He was seen being taken out of the area with his police helmet and shirt torn.

“Look what they did to me. This was pre-planned. There is no police in the area. They want to kill me. I will not leave here until they send local police forces and offer protection to the families of the victims,” ​​Mr. Banerjee said while meeting the family of a victim of post-election violence.

Bengal CID issues summons to Abhishek in ‘forged signature’ probe

Earlier in the day, the West Bengal CID issued a notice to Mr. Banerjee, asking her to appear before it in connection with an investigation into the alleged use of forged signatures of party legislators in a letter submitted to the Assembly Secretariat endorsing Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition.

The notice, described by CID sources as a summons directing him to appear for questioning at the agency’s Bhabani Bhavan headquarters at noon on Monday, June 1, 2026, was personally served to Mr. Banerjee at his residence on Kalighat Road.

The officers conveyed the notice to the TMC MP, who acknowledged receipt of the notice before the CID team finally left around 2.50pm.
