Election Commission of India fine-tunes its strategy to fit in the ground reality
Well tuned: The software for random selection of poll staff has been customized to allocate their respective Assembly constituencies to female staff to the maximum extent possible in the second randomisation process. | Photo Credit: FILE PHOTO
There are more women voters than men in Tamil Nadu, and political parties in the state have long competed with each other to publicize welfare programs designed to benefit women. The Election Commission of India is also adapting itself to a similar reality. It has modified some of its procedures to suit the scenario in Tamil Nadu.
The Electoral Commission decided to continue the computer-based random election system, but instructed officials to prepare a ‘negative list’ of polling stations (located inaccessible or remote) where no female staff would be posted. Earlier, women poll workers were recruited only through manual random selection.
