Emotional Starmer quits as Burnham favoured to be UK PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he is resigning, paving the way for an orderly transfer of power to leader Andy Burnham, who could become the country’s seventh leader in 10 years as early as next month.

In an emotional speech, Starmer said that he listened to the ruling Labor Party and realized that he was no longer the person who would lead the general elections in 2029.

Starmer’s withdrawal after making his announcement on the steps of his Downing Street office and London residence could have triggered a divisive leadership race, but some Labor MPs said they now expected more coronations.

Burnham, 56, a career politician, quickly won the support of another potential leadership rival, former health secretary Wes Streeting; A Labor MP has said the former Greater Manchester mayor is more likely to be appointed as leader.

He entered Parliament to the cheers of Labor MPs and the odd objections of the opposition; Among them was one person who shouted, “He is not the Messiah.”

He later pledged allegiance to the monarch to take his place as a member of parliament; This was a necessary step to become the new leader of the Labor Party and the United Kingdom.

A Labor government is the latest government to suffer voter anger over politicians’ failure to deliver on promises of change, 10 years after the vote to leave the European Union.

Starmer said he would ask the Labor Party organizing committee to set a timetable for a leadership contest to find his replacement.

Nominations will open on July 9, end in mid-July, and in the event of a contest, a new leader will be chosen by September.

The coronation could mean a new leader will take office in mid-July.

When asked on Monday if she planned to call a general election, Burnham said she had many steps ahead of her.

Asked by a BBC reporter if she would stand for election as Labor leader, Burnham said: “You’re jumping through a lot of hoops there.”

Burnham is the only MP to date to confirm she will enter the leadership contest.

Streeting said on Monday that Burnham had not offered him the role of finance minister or another job in a future cabinet.

“He didn’t offer me any work,” Streeting told the BBC.

“That’s not what our conversations are about.”

Starmer announced he would resign on Monday morning after spending the weekend at his country home with his wife contemplating his future.

“The question my party is asking now is whether I am in the best position to lead us to the next general election,” Starmer said in his speech. he said.

“I have received an answer to this question from my parliamentary party and I accept this answer with great kindness,” he said.

A man often criticized for being robotic became visibly emotional after recounting his government’s achievements during its two-year rule, his voice cracking as he thanked his family for their support.

“When I leave the biggest job in the country, I will spend more time on the job that matters most: being the best husband I can to my wonderful wife, Vic, who has been there for me through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy.”

There was some upset within Labor ranks when industry minister Chris McDonald said his speech underlined the fact that he was “a genuinely good man”.

But others said he was treated the same way he treated others as prime minister and that it “ended nobly”.

Although there is hope for a smooth handover, the change is not without risks.

Burnham has yet to set out a full policy agenda, and opposition party Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called an election.

“I’m tired of waiting. Britain needs change – real change, not another destruction put in place by one party,” Farage said.
