Farage and Count Binface among record number of candidates in

Nigel Farage will face an unprecedented 33 rival candidates in the Clacton by-election, a contest he launched to protest media and parliamentary scrutiny of his financial affairs and supporters.

Westminster’s main parties opted to boycott the by-election, dismissing it as a mere “token” from the Reform UK leader.

Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Restore Britain will not field candidates in this by-election.

Yvette Cooper described Farage’s move as a “political tantrum”, while others described it as “fake” and a “trick” to distract from serious allegations against him.

This leaves a very diverse field of competitors; satirical candidate Count Binface and actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox emerge as his most prominent rivals.

Mr Farage had envisioned the contest as a showdown “against the people and the establishment” but now finds himself facing a diverse group including three candidates from the Official Monster Mad Party and several independents.

Tending District Council has confirmed that a total of 34 candidates will run in the August 13 by-election; this figure is believed to be a record for any parliamentary contest.

The previous record, according to the council, was 26 candidates, set in the Halteprice and Howden by-elections in July 2008.

This contest was similarly triggered by Conservative MP Sir David Davis in his own seat, and also saw Westminster’s major parties refusing to take part.

The votes will be distributed in 51 ballot boxes in the constituency, where approximately 80,000 voters will be able to vote.
