Former prosecutor who railed against Trump’s weaponization of DOJ wins Dem primary

Zach Dembo, a former U.S. attorney and Kentucky policy consultant, won the primary Tuesday evening to fill Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District seat.

Although they now have a candidate of their own, Democrats will face an uphill battle to land a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives to replace outgoing Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., in the November general election after a doctor long backed by President Donald Trump won the Republican primary Tuesday evening.

Kentucky state senator Ralph Alvarado, who was recently described as a “true friend” by Trump, won his primary.

Dembo began his career as an eighth-grade English teacher before attending law school and serving in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. according to their website. He served as a federal prosecutor for a time in 2017 and was then tapped by Governor Beshear to serve as policy advisor and legislative director.

Dembo cited Trump’s weaponization of the Justice Department as the catalyst that pushed him to take office.

“I resigned when Donald Trump started using your justice department to go after his political enemies,” Dembo said. in a campaign video.

“Our system is broken.”

By the end of April, Dembo had raised just under a million dollars: $956,000. According to FEC records.

It is noteworthy that Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear did not make any endorsements in the Democratic primary for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional district.

Democrats face major challenges in November’s general election; Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District has historically leaned heavily Republican. Incumbent Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., was last re-elected in 2024 with a 63% to 37% victory over Democratic challenger Randy Cravens.

Barr, who has represented Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District since 2013, is seeking to fill the vacancy in the U.S. Senate left by former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

McConnell, 84, is retiring.
