Bangladesh’s Awami League party on Tuesday announced nationwide protest programs until November 30, demanding the resignation of Mohammed Yunus, Chief Advisor to the country’s interim government, and rejecting the “illegal” International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Bangladesh’s ICT sentenced Hasina to death on November 17 after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity charges related to demonstrations in July last year.

The court also convicted two top Hasina aides; He sentenced former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, a state witness, to five years in prison.

In its statement to the citizens of Bangladesh, Awami League said, “You all witnessed how the so-called court established by the lawless usurper, murderer-fascist Yunus and his clique decided against Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of the Honorable Prime Minister and Awami League President Bangabandhu. You rejected this absurd decision with contempt and protested it wherever possible. On behalf of Bangladesh Awami League, we thank you and express our deep feelings of gratitude.”

“Awami League, with the brave voice and support of the people, organized protests, demonstrations and resistance marches in all districts and upazilas until November 30, rejecting the unlawful decision of the illegal ICT court and demanding the resignation of illegal usurper, murderer-fascist Yunus,” the statement said.

The party accused the Younis-led interim government of conspiring to keep the Awami League and Hasina out of the elections. As part of this conspiracy, the party stated that the interim government was making a “judicial mockery” in the court of its own making.

“Awami League not only rejects the illegal ICT decision but is also working at the grassroots level, holding talks with political leaders, stakeholders and people from all walks of life to break the web of intrigue spun by this occupying force. It is now clear to everyone that the Yunus clique is involved in anti-state conspiracies. The people are ready to fight against these anti-freedom and anti-state forces. And Awami League will lead this fight,” Awami League said.

The party warned that a “phased election” excluding pro-freedom forces, Awami League and Hasina would not be allowed in Bangladesh and would be resisted at all costs.
