From Arnold Schwarzenegger to Sofia Vergara: Stars who became US citizens

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, many stars have become US citizens over the years.
Celebrities with dual citizenship include stars such as Jim Carrey, Pamela Anderson and Ryan Reynolds. In 2004, Carrey made a statement honoring the USA that helped define his career.
“This country helped define me and make my dreams come true,” Carrey said at the time. to date. “I have no intention of giving up my Canadian heritage and everyone who loves and supports me.”

“My Canadian upbringing made me who I am. I will always be proud to be Canadian,” he added.
Below is a look at other stars who have gained US citizenship.
Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson was born in Northern Ireland. The actor explained that the tragedy that followed the death of his wife Natasha Richardson in 2009 pushed him to obtain American citizenship.

“That’s partly why I recently became an American citizen,” Neeson said on “Good Morning America” at the time. “I’ve lived here for 20 years and America has been very, very good to me.”
He added: “Of course I’m still a proud Irishman, but I became an American citizen; I’m very proud of that.”
Sofia Vergara
Sofía Vergara appeared in 2014 on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He announced that he gained US citizenship while participating in the program.

Vergara, who was born in Colombia, told Kimmel at the time that she had passed the citizenship test.
“They’re making you [jump through hoops] because they need to make sure you deserve to be part of the country. The most interesting thing to me is that they give you hundreds of questions that you have to learn, and then they give you a quiz like a quiz… I answered all the questions perfectly,” Vergara said.
Charlize Theron
Born in South Africa, Charlize Theron holds US citizenship, but told David Letterman in 2008 that the process was not easy for her.

“Well, I always wanted to be [a citizen] They just didn’t want to take me. At the time, Theron said: “It’s a pretty long process where you have to work hard, I mean, work at it. Then I finally get approved and you have to go in and do an interview. You have to know your stuff.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger
In 2018, Arnold Schwarzenegger honored the 35th anniversary of becoming an American citizen in a post on X.
“35 years ago today, I became a citizen of the United States. Almost 50 years ago, I came here with empty pockets but full of dreams. I owe it all to America. Without a doubt, it was one of the proudest days of my life,” Schwarzenegger wrote in his post at the time.
The former Republican governor of California was born in Austria.
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt became a US citizen in 2015. At the time, Blunt appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He was a guest on the program. and shared that she exchanged vows with her husband, John Krasinski, in the crowd. London-born Blunt shared that Matthew McConaughey’s wife, Camila Alves, also swore in the same ceremony.

Camila Alves
Born in Brazil, Alves officially became a US citizen in 2015.
On the fifth anniversary, Alves shared on Instagram what this milestone means to him.
“I was grateful to receive my American citizenship five years ago, and I am proud to be a part of this country every day. Thank you today and every day to the soldiers and workers who fought so hard for our rights and freedom,” he wrote.
Pamela Anderson
In 2004, Pamela Anderson became a dual citizen of Canada and America.

“U.S. citizenship will allow me to petition in the future to bring my children’s grandparents to the United States to care for them when they grow up,” she continued. “I have no intention of giving up my Canadian citizenship and I am very proud to be a Canadian.”
Billy Idol
British rock star Billy Idol has been a US citizen since 2018.
At that time, the official X account of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services shared a post on X to honor the Idol.
“It’s a beautiful day for a naturalization ceremony. Congratulations to Billy Idol on becoming a #newUScitizen today in Los Angeles, California,” the account read.
Ryan Reynolds
Canadian-born Ryan Reynolds became a dual citizen in 2018. In 2020, he exercised his rights in America and voted in the presidential election for the first time.
“This is my first time voting in America. I want to thank my wife, Blake, for making my first time so kind and loving. It was so scary at first, then it was exciting, and now I’m a little tired. But I’m proud,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself with his wife, Blake Lively.
Michael J. Fox
