Melbourne dad dies days after alleged savage assault outside primary school pick-up
A father has died after he was allegedly brutally beaten by two men at a pick-up outside a Melbourne primary school.
A 63-year-old Clyde North man was taken to hospital with critical injuries after he was allegedly attacked in Strathaird Reserve at around 3.15pm last Friday. He died in hospital six days later.
Police allege a 21-year-old man of no fixed address and another Narre Warren South man, 22, attacked the father.
They were charged with recklessly causing serious injury.
Both men are in custody, with homicide detectives evaluating alternative charges following autopsy results.
“Police believe the parties involved were known to each other,” a spokesman said.
The alleged incident occurred near Strathaird Primary School in Melbourne’s south-east.
In a letter sent to parents, the school offered medical support to children who witnessed the alleged incident.
An eyewitness told the Herald Sun that several children saw the attack and were “shaken” by the shocking incident.
“They were terrified. I could see him lying on the ground and he couldn’t get up. It looked like he had fainted,” she said.
“I believe her child was there when this happened.
“Two men were standing over him. They were shouting at him and hurting him with a pole or a metal torch. People were shouting at them to stop,” he said.
“It was pretty fast, then they got in their car and drove away.
“This should never have happened at the school.”
Another parent, who pulled over to administer first aid when she saw the man on the ground, said the victim had blood on the back of his head and was incoherent.
“I made sure everyone called the police and the ambulance,” David Wade told the Herald Sun.
“He said he felt dizzy and wanted to throw up. Poor old guy.
“It was home time. It was the most popular after school time.”
“I’m so angry that they did this in front of the kids. I don’t care what their problems are. Just take it somewhere else.”
