Major M25 disruption as two lorry fires shut motorway

National Highways has warned that part of the M25 is closed due to two separate lorry fires.

After a truck caught fire around 03:00 at night, the highway was closed counterclockwise between junction 27 and junction 26. Another vehicle fire closed the highway in the same direction between Junction 28 and Junction 27.

Emergency services are responding to both fires.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service led the response with support from National Highways traffic officers, while specialist rescue efforts continue to save the burning HGV and its occupants between junctions 27 and 26.

Bright orange flames and a bay of smoke could be seen emerging from the burning truck between junctions 27 and 26, according to pictures released by the organisation.

The government agency has warned of delays of up to 72 minutes when approaching junctions with five kilometers of congestion.

Although a diversion would typically be established at Gallows Corner, the route has been closed due to ongoing roadworks. Instead, motorists wishing to travel counterclockwise between J28 and J26 were asked to take an alternative route.

Motorists should exit the M25 on the A12 eastbound at junction 28 and continue on the A12 eastbound at junction 15. They should then exit the A12 at junction 15 and follow the A414 north towards Chelmsford.

At Widford roundabout motorists can take the first exit and continue on the A414 westbound. After continuing on the A414 westbound to junction 7 of the M11 motorway, they can take the first exit on the M11 southbound. They can then exit the M11 onto the A406 westbound and continue for approximately 6 miles to the A10 junction.

Motorists can then rejoin the M25 at junction 25 by continuing on the A10 northbound.

This is breaking news. More to follow…
