The cost to the economy of a US federal government shutdown could be up to $14 billion, depending on how long it lasts. Congressional Budget Office He said Wednesday.

The shutdown, now in its fourth week, will result in a loss of at least $7 billion in gross domestic product by the end of 2026 as furloughed federal employees work fewer weeks, CBO said.

In a letter to U.S. House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, CBO Director Phillip Swagel said the cost will increase as the shutdown lengthens.

Swagel said a six-week shutdown would cost the economy $11 billion, while an eight-week shutdown would cost $14 billion.

Senators remain pessimistic about the chances of reaching a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government even as the effects of the shutdown become more painful for the American people.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., told NBC News on Wednesday that he had seen no evidence of progress.

Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, meanwhile, accused the White House of closing the door on negotiations aimed at ending the impasse.

The shutdown began Oct. 1 after Senate Republicans and Democrats failed to reach a short-term funding deal that would keep the government open.

Democratic senators are insisting that Republicans agree to expand Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies before voting for funding to reopen the government.
