From Coolers To Sprinklers, Measures Taken To Protect Animals From Heat

As the temperature rises above 40 degrees Celsius in India, zoo authorities, forest department, animal sanctuaries and activists are implementing active strategic measures to protect both domestic and wild animals from this scorching heat. Preventive measures range from air conditioning cooling systems to special feeding plans and living space modifications.

Regional initiatives and solutions

Desert coolers and air circulation fans have been arranged in the night shelters of carnivorous animals such as tigers, lions and bears at the Chhatbir Zoo in Punjab. To protect the birds from the heat, the aviaries are covered with 75 percent density agricultural netting and jute mats fixed to prevent heat waves, and continuous sprinkler showers are provided for extra relief. temporary shelters canna (Saccharum Munja), Wooden logs and bamboo are made to protect from harsh sunlight.

Management cells remain vigilant to ensure shelters are cool and comfortable, and backup systems such as tankers and tractors are on standby to guarantee uninterrupted water supply.
