A suspect has been detained after six people were shot dead at a youth center in northern Germany on Monday, authorities said.

The attack took place at noon in the town of Stade, near Hamburg, where approximately 50,000 people live. All of the victims, four women and two men, worked at the youth center or affiliated organizations, authorities said. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he was “deeply shocked” by the violence in a place meant to protect women and children.

“The horrific act of violence at Stade claimed the lives of six people today. I am deeply shocked by the scale of violence in a place that was meant to provide protection,” Steinmeier said. he said.
