Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) ordered stricter monitoring under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act and directed officials to intensify action against illegal sex determination tests after noting a sharp decline in sex ratio at birth (SRB).

Reviewing data in the District Level Standing Committee meeting suggesting that the number of girls in the SRB had fallen from 901 in 2025 to 862 per 1,000 boys in the first four months of 2026, Mr. Singh directed further strengthening of the monitoring mechanism to prevent female feticide and promote gender equality.

The data also showed that the State average dropped from 923 to 898 during the same period.

Mr. Singh instructed officials to conduct special awareness campaigns in villages reporting low sex ratios. He said rallies, graffiti, poster campaigns and events under the Centre’s social awareness campaign, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, should be increased to ensure that the message against female feticide reaches the public.

The DC also examined actions under the PC-PNDT Act, Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Act.

Chief Health Officer Lokvir Singh told the committee that 395 centers in the district were registered under the PC-PNDT Act and 311 of them were inspected. Three FIRs have been registered in 2025 and two in 2026 for the violations. While the registrations of three centers were canceled due to irregularities, five ultrasound machines were also sealed. There are 333 registered MTP centers in the district and 217 of them have been inspected. 59 of the ART centers are registered and operational, while 48 unregistered centers have been closed. Under the ‘Saheli’ initiative, pregnant women with more than one daughter are connected through ASHA and anganwadi workers. According to the statement made by the Prime Ministry, 1,230 women are currently connected to the network.
