Haribo sales hit record as gummies edge out chocolates

German gummy bear maker Haribo said it achieved record sales volume last year, driven in part by new product launches and changing consumer preferences.

“Our worldwide sales increased by 4.5 percent,” Herwig Vennekens, chief commercial officer of Haribo Group, told German business newspaper Handelsblatt in an interview published on Monday.

The confectionery company, headquartered in the western town of Grafschaft, said new products accounted for about a quarter of that growth.

“We have managed to further expand our market share by 2025 and attract new customers from all age groups, especially those aged 20-39,” a company spokesperson said in a follow-up statement.

He said recent sour-flavored launches, including Haribo Pico-Balla Sauer and worm-shaped Haribo Super Wummis, have contributed to the gains.

Vennekens said chewing gum is increasingly replacing chocolate in seasonal shopping such as Christmas and Easter.

“Fruity gummies are increasingly finding their place in Christmas stockings and Easter baskets instead of chocolate,” Vennekens told Handelsblatt, pointing to a shift in consumer behavior as chocolate becomes significantly more expensive due to high cocoa prices.

According to the company, Haribo products are sold in nearly 200 countries around the world.

They are produced in 16 facilities in 11 countries and the company employs approximately 8,500 people.
