Boy, 6, given award for saving his mother’s life

A six-year-old London boy who saved his drowning mother’s life has been awarded the Chief Scout’s Unsung Heroes Award.

Conor Tuohy, who learned emergency first aid skills in the Boy Scouts, stepped in to give his mother a strong slap on the back after she started choking on chicken while eating dinner.

He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t make a sound, and couldn’t get the attention of another adult. Conor continued first aid without any help until the food was removed.

His mother, Anna O’Connor, said: “I’m beyond proud. Conor has taken it all in stride and doesn’t realize what a huge moment this is. I’m so proud of him.”

Conor was among a group of 20 young people honored for their efforts to save lives, raise money and make an impact in their communities at an earlier ceremony.

The six-year-old boy stated that he saw his mother drowning and added: “I remembered something inside me. squirrels“You had to pat someone on the back to get the food out.”

Squirrel Scouts is the youngest section of the Boy Scout Association in the UK, for children aged four to six.

Conor’s mother added: “I’ve never experienced anything like this. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t do anything.

“Conor came and within seconds he was patting me on the back.

“I think all kids should learn basic first aid. Who knows what would have happened if Conor wasn’t with the Chipmunks.”

Chief scout Dwayne Fields said the boys who received the award “showed true courage, kindness and concern for others”.

“They stepped up and made the difference when it mattered most,” Fields added.
