‘I don’t let bullies win’: Ilhan Omar reacts after attack on Minneapolis city hall

Welcome to our live coverage of US politics.

While Donald Trump said he would “escalate” operations in Minneapolis, congresswoman Ilhan Omar was attacked and sprayed with an unknown substance at a town hall event in Minneapolis on Tuesday evening; here he called for the “complete” abolition of ICE.

Before security tackled him to the ground, a man rushed towards him with a syringe and sprayed the politician. The alleged attacker, identified as a 55-year-old Minneapolis resident, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. Jail records identified the man as Anthony James Kazmierczak.

Before returning to the podium, Omar took a step toward the attacker and said: “Here’s the truth that people like this ugly man don’t understand: We are strong in Minnesota. And we will remain resilient in the face of anything they can throw at us.”

Omar, who was not injured in the attack, later stated on social media that she was in good condition and added: “I will not let bullies win. I am grateful to my incredible voters who have rallied behind me.”

President Donald Trump hours before attacking Omar criticized Speaking to a crowd in Iowa, the congressman said his administration would only allow in immigrants “who can show they love our country.”

“They should be proud, not like Ilhan Omar,” he said. When the crowd mentioned his name, he responded with booing.

He added: “He’s coming from a country that’s facing a disaster. So it’s probably considered that, I don’t think it’s even a country.”

Omar and his family fled the civil war in Somalia when he was eight years old and took refuge in the United States after spending years in a refugee camp in Kenya. He is a US citizen.

There were days of protests and international outcry over the shooting of 37-year-old VA nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday, the second fatal shooting of a US civilian by federal law enforcement.

The White House also assessed that federal agents who shot and killed a nurse may have failed to follow “clear guidance” to “establish a physical barrier between the arresting teams and the disruptors,” White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller told AFP.

The White House later said Miller was talking about “general guidance” for immigration agents operating in the state rather than the specific incident in which Pretti was killed.

“We’re going to de-escalate some,” Trump told Fox News, adding that it wasn’t a “withdrawal.”
